Invest in Supportive Housing

Supportive housing is a cost-effective combination of affordable housing and flexible, individualized support services that maximizes people's ability to live independently. Supportive housing is permanent housing.

Supportive housing is permanent housing.

People have a right to stay in their housing so long as they are responsible tenants. While encouraged, participation in services is voluntary. Each supportive housing program has unique aspects and can vary in philosophy, size, tenant mix and support.

Supportive housing results in significant public savings due to reduced needs for emergency crisis care, long-term hospitalization and shelter use, and a decrease in incarcerations.

The District's goal is to develop 55,000 new units of housing by 2020, including 19,000 units of affordable housing. Of those units, more than 7,600 units are needed for the District's poorest residents, including those with special needs. According to the District's 2004 Homeless No More initiative, the District needs over 2,000 units of supportive housing for its residents.
